November Gallery is proud to have supported the publication of the monograph “Goranka”, dedicated to the recently departed photographer Goranka Matić. The promotion took place at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade. Alongside the founder of November Gallery, Srđan Šaper, the speakers included Una Popović, curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, and Nebojša Grujičić of RTS—co-editors of the monograph—as well as director Boris Miljković and Popbooks editor Predrag Popović.
The event also featured a screening of the documentary film “Goranka” by Boris Miljković, which offers an intimate insight into the life and work of Goranka Matić, revealing through personal conversations the stories behind her iconic photographs.
Earlier this year, in February, November Gallery hosted the exhibition “Memory and Hope”, dedicated to Matić’s photographic legacy. Marking the release of the monograph, gallery founder Srđan Šaper—who met Goranka 45 years ago, at the start of his music career with the band Idoli—shared:
“Goranka was the family photographer of our era. Everyone she wished to photograph became part of that family, whether they are alive or gone, whether they love one another or not. Her intimacy and her gaze wove us all into the tapestry of an entire century. To me, Goranka was both a dear friend and the older sister I never had, a business and creative collaborator, a companion and a good fairy who firmly yet gently told me what to do and how to proceed.”
Director Boris Miljković, author of the documentary, added:
“Once the decision was made to publish this major monograph, it felt natural to create a biographical film about Goranka Matić instead of awarding her an official medal of merit. One day we were talking about all of it, and I recorded only the audio—just not to forget. In the end, a whole film emerged, like a friendly movie filled with singing, memories, and laughter.”
The comprehensive, richly designed monograph “Goranka”, containing texts and nearly one thousand photographs, was prepared by Nebojša Grujičić and Una Popović, designed by Borut Vild, and published in a joint co-edition by RTS Publishing, Službeni glasnik, Popbooks (Society of Popular Culture Enthusiasts), the Museum of Contemporary Art, and November Gallery. At this year’s Belgrade Book Fair, the monograph received the ULUPUDS Award for Publishing Achievement of the Year.
Goranka Matić passed away in January, sadly not living to see the publication she had greatly looked forward to and began working on together with the editors last year.
