We proudly present the solo exhibition of the artist Olivera Parlić. The Speculum of the Other exhibition presents the drawings and sculptures that deal with fragility, vulnerability, openness, and fluidity of both form and ourselves. Exemplary pieces of Parlić’s sculptural opus bear witness to the ways she deliberates on structure, the deconstruction of form and especially her relationship with different materials. The exhibition’s title is a syntagm referring to the theoretical concepts of feminist theorist, psychologist, philosopher, and linguist – Luce Irigaray, who in her book of the same title (Speculum of the Other Woman) deliberates on the position of Woman as civilizational Other – the mirror of the patriarchy of Western culture and philosophy that excludes Woman as subject. The exhibited works are the artist’s attempt at écriture féminine, or “women’s writing,” outside the existing (symbolic) order. The unexpressed, the possibility of constant change, irrationality and a logic unknown to the established way of thinking reach their materialization in Parlić’s works.
